I got to spend the day at one of my oldest, fellow LA transplants, Rebecca Lewis’s in-home studio located in the Downtown Mecca. Walking into her dressed up adult like studio, I had an aha moment of realizing how we’ve really bloomed into young adults.
Her exposed brick, crystalized wall, hung up soldering tools, work table, and industrial like furnishings throughout her living room were such a homey balance.
Her place was lit with vibrant energy…
Becca is the owner and designer behind Gramercy Eight. I met Becca in a FIDM chat room whilst both of us were hunting for the “perfect roomie”… Our criteria for a roommate really matched; Someone to party with, and someone who is OCD with cleanliness. We were both just shy of nineteen years old, and thought we understood everything about life, obviously… We never ended up becoming roommates, but we were great friends.
An eery turn of events happened on February 28, 2012 where Becca fell from a three story fire escape, landing on the most fragile part of her body, which was her dainty spine.
The following morning I sat at Cedars with a bundle of flowers looking at my poor friend, Becca in so much agony laying on a hospital bed… I thought that would for sure be it for her, that one last straw to get her back to her home roots in Georgia, and it was.
She moved home, but my oh my did she not skip a beat with her creativity.
Becca took one jewelry design class in Georgia, and that was it for her, the rest was self taught… Working with delicate metals, geodes, crystals, gold, rose gold, silver, and brass, Rebecca created an Etsy account and was up and running a business.
Sitting and reminiscing while running my hands through a vast collection of crystals, Becca told me to pick out a stone that I was drawn to where she then proceeded to make me a finger bracelet, with a raw ruby, (that I’m currently wearing right now, and may never take off).
I have so much respect for this lady, she ended up taking a traumatic accident and turning her life around completely.
